During Andy's trip to Oakland, Calif. he met Larry Hendricks who ran into the Noble family a year later at a fire chaplain conference in Louisville, Ky. and learned of Andy's growing collection of patches. Larry started thinking of ways for Andy to be able to see his life's work. During a trip to Salt Lake City earlier this year he came into contact with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Humanitarian Services and the idea to turn the patches into a traveling display was born.

He presented the idea to the LDS Humanitarian Center and they accepted the challenge. The patches were collected together in seven large plastic bins, weighing 400 pounds. Larry flew to Detroit, Mich. and escorted the patch collection back to Salt Lake City where they arrived in firetrucks at the LDS Humanitarian Center and were unpacked by firefighters.

Signe JacobsenVolunteers at the Humanitarian Center led by Signe Jacobsen, a Church service missionary serving in the sewing room at the Humanitarian Center, will sew the patches into 3-by-8-foot panels for the display. The display will ultimately be several hundred feet long.

Jacobsen’s design includes six blue specialized banners, including one honoring the agencies involved in the 11 September 2001 New York City tragedy. In addition, all the police badges will be mounted on black fabric, while the fireman badges will be sewn on red fabric. In each category, badges are placed according to color, shape and size. Once the layout is finalized, each patch is machine-sewn in a carefully measured spot.

When finished, the display will go on exhibition at various locations throughout the United States as a reminder of the important role law enforcement and emergency personnel play in keeping communities comfortable and safe.
